Almost every poker game involves at least one round of betting. A player may bet, fold, raise or draw a hand based on the rules of the game. If a player’s hand is better than a competitor’s, the winner takes the pot. If a hand is tied, the tie is broken by the highest card unmatched.

Players may place bets directly into the pot or into a side pot. The pot is the sum of all the bets made by all the players during the same deal. The pot can be won by making the largest bet, or it can be won by making a bet that no other player has called.

Poker can be played with a number of different variations, and the number of cards in the deck depends on the game. The earliest form of the game was played with 20 cards, but it was not until after the 1850s that a full 52-card deck was introduced. A game known as stud poker was introduced after 1900.

During the second round of betting, all but one player will fold. A showdown occurs when all the remaining players’ hands are revealed. If all the players are still in the game, the best hand wins the pot. If not, a side pot may be won by a different player. The final round of betting will conclude when the last remaining player collects the pot.
